[That's fine, because he's not exactly in his usual state, either. He was on the couch waiting for her, silently standing when she enters and taking wide, determined strides across the room and--
grabbing her by the collar violently, angry enough to have a touch of blue flame showing at the corner of his mouth as he practically growls at her. He is, quite literally, spitting fire with how furious he is.
[It wasn't an answer, and while it was something he needed to hear it did little to assuage his anger and upset. His hands tightened beneath hers, tears pricking the corners of his eyes as he snarled again.]
You could have been killed! Just because others came back from the dead doesn't mean you would have! What if those things never let you go at all? Goddamn it, Kaoru, I can't lose you, too!
[Her eyes went a little wide because. Crap. He's crying! She's never made someone cry before!
She's kind of just...standing there for a moment, unsure of what to do. But then she slowly reached out to touch frame his face between her palms, trying to pull him closer so their foreheads were touching.]
I'm here. I'm sorry I left like that. I...can't promise I won't do anything stupid ever again because I'm not really that smart, Rin. But I'll try not to, okay? And you won't lose me. I'll always come back, okay? No matter what......
[He tried his best to hold those tears back, but her hands on his face is just too much and the flood gates open. They start spilling down his cheeks, shoulders shaking as he fails to hold back a sob.]
Y... Yukio's gone... I never got to talk to him... I'unno wh-what I woulda done if you left, too...
[Not much more he can say to that. Still, he doesn't let go just yet. There's something keeping him from breaking away, like some dire need to assure himself that she really is there and this isn't some dream.]
[Well that was a good way to break the tension. Face still red and wet from tears, Rin leans back with a toothy grin while snort-laughing at Kaoru's stomach noises.]
If it were anyone else this would be the perfect opportunity for a joke about teenage boys inviting a cute teenager girl to their house when no one else was home.
But well, Rin wasn't that sort of friend and she's actually more concerned than anything right now.]
[They've been friends for five months at this point, and Rin knows full well she has zero interest in him romantically, nor does he really have any strong feelings about her that way.
The joke would be warranted just for it being him asking, but ultimately it was an offer between friends.]
Yeah, uh... no one's ever stuck around long. Not 'cause I'm hard to live with or anythin'. Saruhiko just wanted to live somewhere else, and everyone else, I guess they got sent back home for good or somethin'.

No door knocking about though when she opens the door there's almost none of her usual energy.]
Rin?

So much for relieved hugs.]
What the fuck were you thinkin'?!

After a moment, She reached up, not to pull him off but to just cover his hands with hers.]
I'm sorry. [Which was...not an answer, she knew. But it seemed more important when she had hurt and worried him with her actions.]

[She's just going to pull him into a hug now.]
I'm sorry. [That he didn't get the chance to speak to his brother, that she had scared him so much.]

J-jus'... be more careful, okay... ?

[She holds onto him, tightening her arms around him and she wishes she could make up for worrying him like this, for making him cry.]

Hungry?

Aren't I always?
no subject
I think the only time you're not hungry is when you're sleepin'. C'mon, I got stuff already made.
no subject
I can't help it that I'm a growing teenager! [...of course he does.] Sometimes I think I should just move in with you, then I'd never be hungry again.

I mean... I don't have anyone else here...
