Curiously enough, the chirping of that black sparrow perched on her shoulder goes oddly quiet. Setsura leans just slightly forward in observing Rin on her screen, the corners of her mouth tugging upward. Rubbing his ear like that was one thing -- real cute, she thinks -- but that color -- ]
I don't think you're dumb at all. You've got something on your face, though.
[ She taps a cheek with her finger. Sorry, Rin. She's gotta. ]
[ She leans back now, relaxing marginally. That chirping starts right back up -- a soft little "chichichi" and she lifts a finger to gently rub the top of the sparrow's head.
They're in agreement. He's pretty cute. ]
You sure you aren't being too hard on yourself? Grades aren't everything. Some of the smartest people I know were terrible academics.
Cookin', mostly. I've also been usin' a sword for like two years now? Gotten... pretty good with it. Guess I'm good with animals - I have a familiar back home named Kuro. I'm also pretty... what's the word? ... Tanky? I can take a lotta damage and dish it out just as much.
Setsura... also shouldn't talk about grades. She hasn't been in school in like five decades. Teaching and kicking others into shape, sure, but actually in a desk with quizzes and tests in a modern institution? Nah. Even then, her attendance record was kind of... well, Rin doesn't need to know about that. She's not going to give him the opportunity to find out, not when he gets talking. She finds herself leaning slightly forward again, though. Between the ears, the fangs, the tail, his lack of surprise about her mentioning spirits, his talk of swordsmanship, and now a familiar, she's pausing, piecing. ]
You're not going to try to tell me you're an unassuming, average high school student, are you? Because I'm not going to buy it with that sort of talk.
[He rubs the back of his neck with a nervous laugh.]
Guess I shoulda been more upfront about that. I'm actually a half demon. I was mainly in school to be an exorcist. Just had to do regular classes on top'a that.
[ She drops her cheek into her palm with that, deep violet eyes bright. If he was expecting nervous apprehension or anything like that, he won't find it. No, there's a warm interest over anything cold, calculating. She may have forgotten what she's looking for, too, or perhaps she's decided to put that on hold for the moment. ]
I figured you were half something, I just can't put my finger on your parentage. Your traits are strong like mine, so some kind of youkai was my first guess.
[ Between the feathers that grow from her head, her vertical pupils, the claws that grow entirely too quickly if she doesn't take care in keeping her nails neatly manicured, and her feet -- just a little bigger than the rest of her, not unlike those of the bird perching on her shoulder, hers are strong, especially if one happens to know what they're looking for. They don't scream so loudly here on Prismatica, but back home, it's not hard for the attentive to guess.
Still, an exorcist in training, and one with a familiar... she's not entirely sure how she feels about that last thing, but the way he said it, the name he attributed, puts her at ease. Her curiosity's stirred up real finely now and... well, she may be a little excited. She's been largely bored with the company of recipe gifting spirits these past several months with the exception of the city being flooded with the damned and hungry malevolence during Ainfeil's feast, after all. ]
What's your affiliation?
[ School means organization. It isn't the Hand, it couldn't be, but she wonders if she might recognize the name. ]
[ Knights of the True Cross, hm? She's speeding through the names of various organizations, guilds, and various orders off the top of her head. There's a chance it won't be there, she knows. Different Earths with the same countries, similar concepts -- she hasn't forgotten, but commonalities are as interesting as the differences and maybe, just maybe she wouldn't mind coming into company from the same. Maybe.
She's not exactly hopeful, though. 'Be careful what you wish for' is a popular saying for many a reason and there are plenty of faces she could do without seeing here. ]
Hmm. It's not ringing any bells off the top of my head. I don't guess you're familiar with the Fellowship of the Hand?
[ She'll give in due time. Everything about her posture says 'open' should he feel like asking anything directly. ]
[ Certain over that detail? She is, but it isn't a complete loss. She doesn't sound terribly disappointed either and if she did, well... seeing that tail alleviates that a little. She wonders, though. A half demon studying to become an exorcist... she wonders a lot, to the point picking a place to start is a little tricky. ]
So, what sort of organization is the Knights of the True Cross? There aren't many where I come from that would permit that kind of thing.
[ Double the age of some fledgling Hands, then. The youngest initiates start around eight at the absolute earliest. She hums, thoughtful. Just exorcists running an academy attached to a cram school teaching a half demon, hm? ]
I see. Well, I'll be experiencing first-hand that cooking skill of yours soon enough. How good is "pretty good" with a sword? And tell me about your familiar, too! Kuro's a cute name.
[ And she's glad there's a name, an identity attached there. She really, really is. ]
Eeh... like a year-ish of actual trainin', a year just doin' whatever I could in that other place.
[Sorry, that's probably not very helpful.]
He was actually my dad's familiar before he died. He was a guardian for silk weavers for like a hundred somethin' years but when the place got torn down he got picked up by my dad. He likes to sit on my head.
[ There's a good look on him, some spirit. Not too helpful a description regarding his swordsmanship, but some things are better experienced in gauging, she thinks. Pauses a second. Is she considering that? She taps her pointer and middle against her temple, not quite shifting her cheek in her palm as she continues listening.
[ What would that be? Something that can sit on his head, that doesn't sound like a dog. It doesn't sound like a dog at all. There's plenty of things that might sit on someone's head. Even tiny tree spirits can, but she doesn't imagine they'd be that sort of guardian. That Kuro was his dad's, that's something that sees her pause, but she can't quite help but ask. ]
[ If it looks like some of the color is draining out of her face, that's because it is. A cat? Of course it's a cat. It had to be a cat. Why's it always cats? They're so -- so -- she can't quite finish the thought. The hair at the back of her neck is literally standing on end. Did she just swallow? Quietly. ]
Ah.
[ Yes, "ah". Very eloquent, Setsura. Very dignified, a real confident response. ]
It takes a good measure of self-control not to jerk the phone back as far from her face as possible as though he might come through the screen and pounce on her. No, she keeps it together, slow her heart rate because the way he's looking at her is -- it's making her nervous. It makes her want force the wings she can't and immediately take to a tree and that look suggests he knows it.
He's not, right? He can't be. ]
You mean besides the fact that the majority of them are arrogant little furballs who think they can do whatever they please like some kind of insufferably fuzzy loose cannon?
[ She watches him for a moment, then quietly folds her arms under her chest, the image shifting a bit for the turn of the camera before she focuses it on herself again. Pull it together? She's pulled it together with that laughter of his, head tilted up and eyes away because there's nothing funny about this... or that clinging nervousness she's shoved down, down, down, her wondering.
He's not a cat, right? He's messing with her. More importantly -- ]
everything was always video, it's fine
