I'm glad to hear it, though. You must have some sort of luck to have made it through alright.

[ She might've found herself wondering after him as the days went on after their first meeting, so it's maybe a bit of relief to hear as much from him. ]

[ She supposes. She may actually sound a little... bored. Disappointed maybe? It's something. ]

The city's spiritual traffic is back to normal, which means there's about five spirits around regularly trying to pass out mundane recipes. [ And that's it. ]

Recipes?

[Why are spirits trying to pass out recipes?

Also what kind?]

That's right. Sometimes it's more mundane things like how to braid rope out of a specific fiber, but the recipes are what I pay the most attention to.

[ Rope isn't tasty, after all, and she doesn't know rightly know why it's always like that. She looks for answers to serious questions one might guess a spirit'd be able to give some insight into and gets sometimes tasty instructions instead. It's not ideal. Tasty, though. She can't deny that. ]

They're local. I've got recipes for different kinds of candy apples, flavored caramels, pumpkin everything, a few different kinds of roasts, a vegetable medley. [ A beat. Hm. ] I'd have to check my notes to remember them all.

Huh.

[Color him surprised. Of all the things he thought spirits did, handing out recipes wasn't one of them.

The ones he dealt with were more the prankster and drama causing sort.]

... can I have 'em?

[ Most people don't ask for a recipe if they aren't planning on trying it. Hmm! ]

[Of course he's planning on trying it! Cooking is his one skill.]

[ That's it, that's her terms. ]

I don't know. Some people are really shy in the kitchen. It seemed like a better idea to put it in stone than pass the opportunity by.

[ She's shifting the device, shuffling around. Pleased? She's pleased. ]

Tch! I ain't shy about that! Cookin' is the one thing I'm good at! I'm a bombass chef and I want everyone to know it!

... That, and I kinda fed most of a village for a year.

You don't exactly strike me as the rustic chef type, Okumura-kun.

[ Not talking like that and his wording is... specific enough to see her ask, pry. He said "kinda fed most of a village," not "worked at McDenny's". ]

What's this about feeding a village?

I... didn't really have a choice. The place I was in before this... it didn't have power. It barely had enough food for everyone. The houses were all fallin' apart.

[It wasn't that long ago either.]

[ That doesn't have the sound of a happy memory. Come to think of it, didn't he look a little... thin maybe? When she'd seen him on the screen at that time. He's not being very specific either. Villages, no matter how far removed from bustling urban hubs, normally have names and a means to address its population's needs. ]

What village was this? And... why were you in a place like that?

[It is, in fact, not a happy memory.]

It uhm. It didn't have a name. We called it Chroma Village.

Same reason we're here, more or less.

[ Yeah, she's seeing the irony there and she's pausing her train of thought. She was seconds away from, "Okay, and where were the adults?" Not that adults are necessarily reliable either. ]

So this isn't your first off world experience with a bunch of messy gods.

[ If he was taken from another world, then what does that mean? She wasn't imagining it either. He was pretty thin and she'd bet money his metabolism is like hers. Fast, demanding. ]

Yeah.

[There were adults. They were in the same exact situation. Adult or child matters very little when you're all tossed across the cosmos to a colorless falling apart fairy tale village with limited supplies and the only outside contact being from a faceless individual on a forum who refused to answer questions.

It was a special level of hell.

He does look better now, but unfortunately that's not something you recover from quickly.]

[ With an answer like that? Naturally, but especially because she's accustomed to having this talk. Well, less having it these days and more air dropping energy bars and snacks onto her boss' thick head via her shikigami back home because he doesn't remember to eat or sleep if she's not on him.

Things happen here, though. Rin's seen it firsthand and he's proven reliable, so she may already be considering how to use their deal to her advantage. ]

You don't want to get caught out of shape and hungry here, Okumura-kun. You need to make sure you're eating well. As a chef, I'm sure you're aware how important getting the proper nutrition is.

[He knows he could have worded that better and made it sound less concerning, but really isn't the sort for quick thinking like that.

He rubs at his ear, pointedly looking away. He might be turning a bit red.]

[ Oh.

Curiously enough, the chirping of that black sparrow perched on her shoulder goes oddly quiet. Setsura leans just slightly forward in observing Rin on her screen, the corners of her mouth tugging upward. Rubbing his ear like that was one thing -- real cute, she thinks -- but that color -- ]

I don't think you're dumb at all. You've got something on your face, though.

[ She taps a cheek with her finger. Sorry, Rin. She's gotta. ]

No one saw a thing

[He lets out a frustrated noise, her comment doing shit all to make the red go away. In fact that seems to make it worse.

He tries to play it cool anyway.]

I hear that a lot, but I know I'm not smart. I've got skills but my grades have always been trash. You don't gotta pat my ass and tell me otherwise.

[chichichi]

[ She leans back now, relaxing marginally. That chirping starts right back up -- a soft little "chichichi" and she lifts a finger to gently rub the top of the sparrow's head.

They're in agreement. He's pretty cute. ]

You sure you aren't being too hard on yourself? Grades aren't everything. Some of the smartest people I know were terrible academics.

[ Although she's curious now... ]

Where I'm from, grades are everythin'.

Cookin', mostly. I've also been usin' a sword for like two years now? Gotten... pretty good with it. Guess I'm good with animals - I have a familiar back home named Kuro. I'm also pretty... what's the word? ... Tanky? I can take a lotta damage and dish it out just as much.

Setsura... also shouldn't talk about grades. She hasn't been in school in like five decades. Teaching and kicking others into shape, sure, but actually in a desk with quizzes and tests in a modern institution? Nah. Even then, her attendance record was kind of... well, Rin doesn't need to know about that. She's not going to give him the opportunity to find out, not when he gets talking. She finds herself leaning slightly forward again, though. Between the ears, the fangs, the tail, his lack of surprise about her mentioning spirits, his talk of swordsmanship, and now a familiar, she's pausing, piecing. ]

You're not going to try to tell me you're an unassuming, average high school student, are you? Because I'm not going to buy it with that sort of talk.
